Special and Designer Models

Bösendorfer has been working with renowed architects and designers since the 19th century, as all instruments are built by hand.

The latest designmodel - Bösendorfer designed by Audi

This section shows an excerpt of the vast variety of individual pianos, created by designers, architects and individuals since 1828.
We summarized our experiences together with the New Design University in Austria in the "Piano Design Handbook", which can be obtained from any member of the Bösendorfer dealer's family, or directly from us.

Bosendorfer Special Models

When Ignaz Bösendorfer founded the Bösendorfer piano company in 1828, piano building was in a phase of strong growth and development. Instrument manufacturers were confronted with the constantly increasing demands that pianists made on their instruments. This was due on the one hand to continually larger performance venues and on the other to the drive in compositional development to realize pieces with greater dynamics and a larger compass. A unique atmosphere for the piano’s rapid development arose in Vienna’s exceptionally creative musical environment.
The collaboration with artists such as Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein, who were lifelong friends of the Bösendorfer company, is legendary. In addition to their tonal and playing aspects, the instruments’ external design also developed naturally.

Stylistic elements changed virtually in sync with technical developments, as the formal design became grander and more imposing together with the increased strength and richness of sound. The delicate and playfully ornate sounding body of a Biedermeier piano changed over time to the current preferred polished black concert grand with its corresponding stately proportions. Responding to the challenges of sound, playability and formal design was always a primary concern for Bösendorfer as a piano manufacturer and remains so to this day.

A piano manufacturer worthy of the name (Latin manus – hand, and factura – making) can also give proof of its ability by building special models and one-of-a-kind instruments. We need not make allowances for conveyor belts and robots – at Bösendorfer, instruments are made by genuine craftspersons!
